Touring internationally since 2008, “Play Me, I’m Yours” is an artwork by British artist Luke Jerram. Reaching over six million people worldwide – more than 1,300 pianos have already been installed in 43 cities across the globe, from New York to London, bearing the simple instruction “Play Me, I’m Yours”.
Located in public parks, bus shelters and train stations, markets and even ferries the pianos are available for any member of the public to play and enjoy. Who plays them and how long they remain on the streets is up to each community and the local organizer. Many pianos are personalized and decorated by artists or the local community. By creating a place of exchange “Play Me, I’m Yours” invites the public to engage with, activate and take ownership of their urban environment.
The capital city of Cyprus, Nicosia, will soon welcome ten brand new upright pianos in its streets, parks and squares. Unlike other examples from different cities, Nicosia (joined organization by Avantgarde Cultural Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus) decided on presenting 10 all-new instruments to its people. To add to the already exciting project, the organizers invited the country’s finest artists to decorate the pianos. Famous painters with long histories of successful exhibitions and installations were brought in to put their signature on this daring interactive installation.
Ten pianos are to remain continuously in the streets of Nicosia for ten days (and nights)! The island of Cyprus is a favorite tourist destination due to its warm weather but over the night it can be also humid. It was therefore apparent that the pianos will be placed under extreme weather changes for a long period of time. The instruments must therefore have the ability to withstand such suffering; even leaving the intense and severe playing from the public completely out of the equation.
The Perzina “122 Konsumat” upright appeared as the only solution to this predicament. Ten pianos have already left the factory for Cyprus, prepared in a white primer to enable the artists to decorate the instruments the way they want. Ten three-dimensional musical canvases for ten of the country’s most famous artists to paint on! Magnificent!
In October 2014 the pianos will invade Nicosia and its people will have the opportunity to play the pianos, enjoy themselves, socialize, produce music, create culture, experience life. Perzina will be the centerpiece of all the action!
What will happen to the pianos after the installation? Avantgarde Cultural Foundation’s social awareness is well known, and just like on many other occasions in the past, Avantgarde will donate all ten Perzina upright pianos to an equal number of children’s hospitals and rehabilitation centers! Amazing. Well done Avantgarde. Well done Cyprus!
